Bedřich Smetana, the creator of Czech modern classical music, was born in Litomyšl in 1824. In 1949 the first festival was held in his honour, an event that has evolved into Smetana’s Litomyšl International Opera Festival.
Festival Internacional de Música da Póvoa de Varzim is dedicated to classical music with a special emphasis on Renaissance and baroque music. Through its composition competition and masterclasses it also supports new Portuguese music and young musicians.
