The partially restored Elaiourgio, a former soap factory, is the location of the Aisxylia Festival in Eleusis, 23 km west of Athens. The factory is situated next to the city’s main archaeological site, where one of the most important initiation ceremonies of antiquity, the Eleusinian Mysteries, took place. In this dramatic setting, the festival hosts a variety of theatre performances, concerts and films throughout the summer months, as well as a renowned annual contemporary art commission.
The Athens International Film Festival was founded in 1995 by the Athens Film Society with the intention of highlighting lesser-known aspects and genres of independent cinema – indie diamonds in the rough. It introduces audiences to some of the best productions of the year and has established itself as the ideal opening of the upcoming movie season. The festival is one of the few of its kind to feature a “Music & Film” competition section, and the event includes workshops, lectures and parties.
