The ancient Bulgarian capital of Veliko Tarnovo hosts an open-air summer opera festival: Stage of the Ages. In 1985 an opera was performed for the first time amid the ruined medieval palace on Tsarevets hill. The production, “Ivaylo” by Goleminov, was followed in 1987 by “Tsar Kaloyan” by Vladigerov. Both operas are set in this historic site, hence the name “Stage of the Ages”. So began this unique festival of opera, held annually since 2008 and attracting visitors from all around the world. From 2016 the name is transformed to "Open Air Festival of Bulgarian Opera Theatres "Stage of the Ages".
