Bedřich Smetana, the creator of Czech modern classical music, was born in Litomyšl in 1824. In 1949 the first festival was held in his honour, an event that has evolved into Smetana’s Litomyšl International Opera Festival. A full range of concerts makes up the programme, and while opera is at its heart, other musical forms are featured. Most performances take place in the magnificent UNESCO listed Litomyšl Castle, especially in the courtyard with its excellent acoustics and retractable roofing.
