As the summer cultural capital of Bulgaria, Varna, on the Black Sea coast, is a meeting point for Bulgarian and international art events, chief among which is the International Folklore Festival. The festival was founded in 1992 by the Varna Municipality, which remains its main organizer. In the 23 editions held so far 150 folk ensembles or over 10,000 participants from 50 countries in Europe, Asia and America, and another 56 amateur and professional ensembles from Bulgaria, have taken part.

The festival brings together young people from across the country and connects them with their natural environment. It is held in the stunningly beautiful Vratsa Balkan Nature Reserve, on the Okolchitsa Peak, and combines music and performance art with raising awareness of ecology and the attractions of this little-known region.
