Traditionally, Kotor Festival of Theatre for Children takes place in the first twelve days of July in Kotor, magical scenery town, UNESCO’s heritage, in one of the most beautiful bays in the world. Festival ceremoniously begins by Mayor of Kotor giving the keys of the Old Town to children and thus symbolically gives them the management of the city. Founded in 1993, on the site of only ten steps away from the Kotor Theater, where the first puppet show was performed in 1829. The most important festival in South-East Europe dedicated to theater work for children and youth. The festival is under the special patronage of the President of Montenegro. Continuous Festival sponsors are the Ministry of Culture of Montenegro, Municipality of Kotor and UNESCO. As part of the KotorArt association, the festival was declared a cultural manifestation of special importance in Montenegro. In 2013 Festival has been selected and co-financed by the European Union program - Culture 2007-2013, as one of the ten best European festivals. The National Tourism Organisation of Montenegro awarded festival with Wild Beauty Award for the best event - the event that has most contributed to the quality and development of tourism in Montenegro in 2015. It takes place during the summer tourist season on over 30 locations in the municipality of Kotor and fills every pore of the Old Town with its art installations and other programs: performances, films, exhibitions, concerts, dance performances, literary events, symposia, schools, workshops, happenings... Ninety percent of the programs are free, and the remaining programs have a symbolic ticket price. Festival exists to recognize and encourage interdisciplinary skills of children and their contribution to the development of society in the future: Children of today - World of tomorrow. It encourages professional development of performing arts for children and youth, displaying best puppetry, drama and multimedia productions from European countries and all around the world. It is focused on creating modern values such as inclusion of children and youth with disabilities and other socially vulnerable groups, social awareness of children’s rights, volunteerism, interculturalism. Festival is dedicated to children and youth, but also to all those who cherish the child in themselves.
