The Puppet Theatre on the Crossroads is the main convenor of the International Festival Bábkarská Bystrica TOUR 2018. Its 21st edition is held from 5 to 9 October 2018.
Prior to the Festival, we hold a range of theatre and pre-theatre activities within the framework of the pre-Festival Prologue. The events are held in the Theatre Tent beneath the Memorial to the Slovak National Uprising. This year we launch the events on 21 September.
The Prologue is a pre-Festival platform for families and children. We hold live exhibition Family Puppet Theatre. The items portraying traditional family theatres and marionettes are on loan from the Slovak National Museum – Museum of Puppetry Cultures and Toys housed at the Castle Modrý Kameň. The exhibition outlines the development of Czech and Slovak puppetry from interwar period until present day. Visitors will be guided through the exhibition by students from the Department of Puppetry, Theatre Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava.
The exhibition opens on Friday 21 September at 16.00 hrs. The celebratory opening will also feature puppet performance by the Literature and Drama Department at the Arts School Modrý
J. Čapek: How Doggie and Pussycat Baked a Cake
The exhibition is open daily from 21 September until 9 October at 10 – 15 and 16 – 18 hrs in the Theatre Tent beneath the Memorial to the Slovak National Uprising in Banská Bystrica.
The two September weekends will bring to Drama and Dance Jamboree of Young Talents. Banská Bystrica will thus host eight children companies from across the region of Banská Bystrica, namely from Banská Bystrica, Zvolen, Podkonice, Hriňová, Polomka, Sliač, Poltár, and Kremnica. Most of the featured companies will be performing for the first time ever at a professional theatre festival, acting thus as a prologue to the international theatre performances that will follow during the Festival. The leitmotif of the Festival is Under the Sign of Togetherness has given rise to collaboration with theatre companies and Roma community centres that are the Festival partners within the framework of the Festival line Terra Incognita.* Within the four days, over 100 gifted children will present their drama and dance talent which they have been developing for a number of years.
The programme is held on 22, 23, 29 and 30 September, starting at 16 hrs.

Along with the events in the Theatre Tent, an exhibition of theatre photography Slovak Puppets in Pilsen, Czech Puppets in Bystrica will be held in the National Science Library in Banská Bystrica. The exhibition outlines Slovak–Czech puppetry cooperation, capturing the most appealing Slovak productions that featured at Skupova Plzeň, the major puppetry festival in the Czech Republic, and, reciprocally, the most fascinating Czech productions presented at the Festival Bábkarská Bystrica.
