The Puppet Theatre on the Crossroads is the main convenor of the International Festival Bábkarská Bystrica TOUR 2018. Its 21st edition is held from 5 to 9 October 2018.

From 2016 it brings international puppet theatre productions into the countryside across the region of Banská Bystrica. The main programme contains 22 performances by 19 companies from 9 countries across Europe and further afield: Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Poland, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, France, Belarus, and Brazil.

Since eight years the Festival is divided into two impulses. The programme for children audiences, The First Impulse (5 - 7 October), brings performances and events for children of different ages, from toddlers to teenagers. The First Impulse, that has been for the 2018 edition in three areas that epitomise performances for children, is “an intention is to present the work of non-commercial nature dedicated to all age categories, from toddlers to teenagers. It is work that offers theatre performances outside the mainstream theatre for children. It points out the creative lines used by theatres in order to avoid clichés,” explains Iveta Škripková, the Festival Director and member of Programme Board.

The Second Impulse (8-9 October) that follows is dedicated to puppet, object and movement theatre for adults. “The Second Impulse follows the aim to eliminate prejudice against puppet theatre dedicated to adults..The programme contains six productions which we find to be representative of contemporary lines in puppet theatre for adults,” explains Ms Škripková.

The milestone year of 2018 has inspired the Festival team to also engage in theatre research. The programme accompanying the Second Impulse, that brings a book launch of the Puppets on Czech and Slovak Borderline, 1918 – 2018.

Prior to the Festival (21-30 Sept.), we hold a range of theatre and pre-theatre activities within the framework of the pre-Festival Prologue. The events are held in the Theatre Tent beneath the Memorial to the Slovak National Uprising. This year we launch the events on 21 September. The Prologue is a pre-Festival platform for families and children. We hold live exhibition Family Puppet Theatre. The exhibition outlines the development of Czech and Slovak puppetry from interwar period until present day.
